Man arrested by ICE subject of warrant

SALINE COUNTY, MO – A non-citizen was the subject of a warrant out of Saline County.

Although, Immigration and Customs Enforcement took Nicholas Corona-Garcia into custody last year, a warrant was issued Wednesday with bond set at $250,000.  In a probable cause statement, the mother of two boys, Elizabeth Ann Lopez, blamed Corona-Garcia for the physical abuse of her two sons who reportedly suffered bone fractures, intestinal damage and malnourishment.

UPDATE: Former Great Circle employee allegedly rapes teen campus resident

UPDATE: 05/03/17 — Great Circle reached out to KMZU News and said they are aware of the allegations against a staff member. In a release, the nonprofit behavioral health services provider said that a staff member quickly notified the Missouri Children’s Division and other authorities concerned to report the allegations.

Great Circle added that while they cannot comment on the investigation, they will support and cooperate with the investigation. The release stressed that the well-being of their clients is their first priority, and that Reid’s alleged conduct “runs counter to everything for which our organization stands.”

The organization said it suspended and terminated Reid after the allegations came to light. 

MARSHALL, Mo. — The Marshall Police Department carried out an investigation after officers were contacted by a Children’s Division Out of Home Investigator.

According to a release from the Marshall Police Department, they were told the investigator had received a Child Abuse/Neglect Hotline report regarding a teenage resident at the Great Circle Tom Butterfield campus.

It was reported that the 16-year old female, who remains unidentified, had left the campus with a staff member, Joshua A. Reid, 28.

The investigator told police the two had left the facility alone and the victim had since reported the two allegedly had sexual intercourse twice while they were gone.

Marshall Police Department Detectives, assisted by the Missouri Department of Social Services Children’s Division, arrested Reid for statutory rape in the second degree.

A warrant issued by the Saline County Circuit Court charged him with two counts of statutory sodomy in the second degree and one count of statutory rape in the second degree. He is being held on a $20,000.00 bond, cash or surety.

Reid was taken to the Saline County Justice Facility to be held.

Sedalia man arraigned on weapons, assault charges

PETTIS COUNTY, Mo. — A man accused of drug possession in Pettis County was arraigned when he appeared by video conference Wednesday.

According to court documents filed in the Pettis County Circuit Court, 48-year-old Sedalia resident Lonnie R. Thompson is accused of striking a woman and beating on her door and outside wall with a hammer. Thompson also allegedly threatened to kill the unidentified female victim.

He is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and domestic assault in the second degree.

At the hearing, Thompson was formally arraigned by Judge Jeff Mittelhauser in a Pettis County court room.

Thompson’s case was continued to Tuesday, June 27 at 1:30 p.m. He is slated to go before the court for a regular hearing.

Child abuse case against Marshall woman to continue

MARSHALL, MO – A Marshall woman stands accused of felony abuse or neglect of a child resulting in death.

A case review is scheduled Monday morning for Lara Browder, 27. Her eight-month-old child died in the fall of 2016 and an autopsy showed the child died from blunt force trauma to the head, which resulted in large skull fractures. The child was in Browder’s sole care. She has denied causing the child’s traumatic injuries.

The hearing is at 10 a.m. in Saline County.

Case headed to trial explores allegations of sodomy and abuse

ST. JOSEPH, MO – A trial date will be set Monday afternoon for an Albany resident.

According to court records, Lewis Marshall is accused of sodomy and sexual abuse from 1990 and 1993.  A warrant was served this year in June. A plea of not guilty was entered by the defendant last week.

The trial setting Monday is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Buchanan County Court.

Opioid crisis extends to health practitioners according to experts

The decision to re-license convicted doctors by a Missouri board is being described as contributive to the opioid epidemic.

According to the Kansas City Star, The Board of Registration for the Healing Arts re-licensed Charles Sutherland and Michael Impey, who were convicted of illegal distribution of controlled substances and prescription forgery. Randall Williams, director of Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, said it is part of a systemic pattern of physician drug abuse.

He is assisting Governor greitens in fighting the state’s opioid problem.

Charges for sex crimes listed against Richmond man

RAY COUNTY, – Charges of sexual abuse and child molestation have been leveled against a Richmond man from July of this year.

A warrant issued Wednesday, listed in Ray County Court documents, names charges against Derek Smith that include first degree sexual abuse, and two counts of fourth degree child molestation.

Bond and court dates have not been set.

Jury trial to decide the fate of woman accused of child abuse

RICHMOND, MO – A jury trial is scheduled for a Blue Springs woman in Ray County court.

A jury will decide whether sufficient evidence shows Shelby Mattson committed three counts of abuse or neglect of a child. Two of those counts also allege serious emotional or physical injury. The three-day trial is set to begin 9 a.m. Monday morning.

The charges originated from events in February, 2015 alleging a 16-month old child had been in Mattson’s care when he suffered injuries, including bruises and broken bones.

Sentenced Chillicothe man is denied retrial in sodomy case

CHILLICOTHE, MO – A case against a Chillicothe man was concluded Friday.

According to a regular report from the Livingston County Sheriff, Deputies took into custody Adam Woodworth, 39, after a Circuit Court sentencing hearing took place. Woodworth received sentences for felony convictions that stemmed from an investigation begun in 2015 by the LCSO, State Technical Assistance Team, Child Advocacy Center, and Children’s Division. Woodworth has been the subject of a court case reviewing several felony counts, including statutory sodomy, child molestation, sexual misconduct, and abuse or neglect of a child.

According to court records, a motion by the defendant for a new trial was denied.  Sentence was pronounced for eight separate charges that will run a total of 20 years in Department of Corrections.

Plea entered in child endangerment case

HUNTSVILLE, MO – A court hearing yesterday in Randolph County heard a not-guilty plea from a Clark resident accused of neglect.

Court documents indicate, Zachary S. Ruffel, 27, faces felony allegations including, child abuse or neglect, and endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk. Formal charges were filed last week.

Bond has been set at $20,000. Future court dates are pending.

Man and woman from Sedalia facing child abuse charges

PETTIS COUNTY, Mo. — Two residents of Sedalia are facing felony charges for allegedly abusing a child.

According to a probable cause statement filed in a Pettis County courtroom, officers investigated a report of child abuse on December 8 of this year.

The report alleges that the child, who was not named, was abused severely. An examination by medical professionals found that the child had been beaten badly, receiving many bruises. The victim also had blood inside their abdomen and had the lining of their colon knocked out of place, all injuries that are consistent with child abuse.

A man and woman, reportedly the victim’s mother and stepfather, are now both facing child abuse allegations. Stephen M. Brandkamp, 26, of Sedalia, is charged with first degree assault causing serious physical injury and abuse or neglect of a child, causing serious emotional or physical injury. Bond is set at $150,000, cash or surety allowed.

In addition, Britney S. Brandkamp, 26, also of Sedalia, is charged with first degree endangering the welfare of a child creating a substantial risk, with bond set at $25,000.

Ms. Brandkamp will appear for arraignment on January 2 at 9:00 a.m. while Mr. Brandkamp will go before  a judge at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9 for a hearing.

Animal abuse cases prompt warning from officials

The Livingston County Sheriff has warned residents they will take seriously any report of animal neglect and abuse.

The office reportedly opened at least two cases December 27, 2017.   A statement released by the Sheriff’s Department says, “Take care of your animals, if you cannot properly care for your pet or livestock either immediately sell or give them to someone who will.”

Each of the incidents may result in criminal charges, arrest, or potential seizure of pets and livestock. Each day is a potential new criminal charge.

The Livingston County Sheriff asks anyone with concerns of animal abuse or neglect to call the LCSO at 660-646-0515 or dispatch at 660-646-2121.

Richmond man facing serious child abuse allegations

RAY COUNTY, Mo. — A resident of Richmond is accused of severely beating an infant.

According to a probable cause statement filed in Ray County court the investigation was carried out by the Ray County Division of Family Services January 3 when they were informed by authorities in Ray County regarding a possible incident of child abuse.

Court documents allege that investigators were informed that a one-year-old boy had been taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital for treatment of injuries consistent with being beaten severely.

Medical personnel reportedly treated the baby for serious facial bruising. The bruising extended all over the rest of the child’s body, according to the probable cause statement.

Vince Eugene Hicks, 18, of Richmond, is now facing a single felony charge for abuse of a child – causing serious physical injury without sexual contact. Prosecutors allege he beat the child before he was admitted to Children’s Mercy Wednesday.

Bond was set for Hicks at $200,000, cash only. He is currently behind bars in Ray County. Future court dates are pending.

Sheriff’s Office responds to several cases of animal abuse

CARROLL COUNTY, MO – After the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office was contacted to conduct a well-being check on an individual, several animals were taken into custody.

According to the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, deputies discovered evidence of animal neglect, cruelty, and abuse which was allegedly perpetrated on ten dogs that were eventually removed from the property. They were taken into the care of deputies, and the Humane Society.

The location of the property and identity of the owner were not provided.

The post indicates there are two types of animal abuse: passive and active.  This takes the form of neglect, and intentional harm. The Carroll County Sheriff urges concerned citizens to report any instances of abuse without hesitation.

Couple facing more than 50 combined counts of child abuse in Ray County

RAY COUNTY, Mo. — Charges have been filed against a couple accused of child abuse in Ray County.

A probable cause statement filed Friday in a Ray County Courtroom charges a couple from Camden with abusing a nine-year-old girl.

According to the statement, the female victim suffered partial amputation of a finger on her right hand, had a fractured left wrist and forearm and multiple fractured ribs.

The young victim also reportedly suffered severe bruising, allegedly at the hands of 29-year-old Mario Barreto.

Melissa Holloway, VINELink

The girl, according to the statement, was in the care of Barreto and 25-year-old Melissa Holloway when the alleged abuse occurred. The victim told authorities she had told Holloway about the abuse, however she had done nothing at all to stop Barreto.

Barreto now faces numerous felony charges, including nearly thirty total counts of abuse or neglect of a child, causing serious physical injury – no sexual contact. He is held at the Ray County Jail on $250,000 bond, cash only.

Holloway is also charged with 22 felony counts of abuse or neglect of a child without sexual contact as well as for hindering the prosecution of a felony.

Holloway is also behind bars at the Ray County Jail. Bond was set at $150,000, cash only. Future court dates have not yet been set for either defendant.

Crossroads Correctional Center reports the death of a 70-year-old offender

CAMERON, Mo.- Another offender death has been reported today from the correctional facility in Cameron, Mo.

According to a release from the Missouri Department of Corrections, at 11:49 a.m. yesterday, March 28, 2018, offender Gary Todd, was pronounced dead at the Crossroads Correctional Center.

Todd was a 70-year-old male serving a 66-year sentence for two counts of statutory sodomy from Clay County, one count of sodomy and one count of abuse of a child from Jackson County. He was first booked into the Missouri Department of Corrections in June of 1997.

Todd reportedly died of apparent natural causes.

Camden couple in court for child abuse charges

RICHMOND, MO – A couple from Camden are facing court proceedings Tuesday in Ray County for child abuse charges.

A peremptory hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Court records show that Mario A. Barreto, 29, faces nearly 30 felony counts for endangering the welfare of a child after he allegedly beat the child repeatedly. A probable cause statement alleges that Barreto beat a nine-year-old who lived in Barreto’s residence. A co-defendant, Melissa A. Holloway, 25, faces 22 felony counts of abuse or neglect, for alleged inaction and allowing the abuse to continue. She is also charged with hindering prosecution.

Lawson couple accused of abusing child over several years

RAY COUNTY, Mo. – An 8 year old girl claims a Ray County couple physically and mentally abused her for nearly three years.

Joseph M. Gorham, 30, and Tiffany Michelle Gorham, 28, both of Lawson, have been charged in Ray County, with 26 counts each of felony abuse or neglect of a child. Six of those charges are class B felonies for causing serious emotional or physical injury. Joseph Gorham entered a not guilty plea at his initial arraignment and has a new hearing set for 8:30 a.m. on June 12.

The result of yesterday’s initial arraignment of Tiffany Gorham have not yet been posted.

Court considers bond reduction in abuse case

RAY COUNTY, MO – A motion for bond reduction was filed today in a child abuse case against a Camden woman.

The Court will consider the matter in a case against Melissa A. Holloway, 25, who is charged with 22 felony counts of child abuse or neglect , a single felony count of hindering prosecution of a felony, and tampering with a witness. Holloway was charged at the same time as her boyfriend, Mario Allen Barreto, who was charged with 29 counts of abuse or neglect of a 9 year old girl who resided in their home.

An arraignment for Holloway is scheduled for June 6.
